While AI is enhancing efficiency and productivity at Upwork, Brown clarifies that it is not the primary factor behind recent organizational changes, including a decision to cut a quarter of the corporate staff to improve profitability.

Freelancers equipped with AI skills are earning 34% more than their peers without such skills, reflecting the growing value of these competencies in the freelance economy. The appeal of freelancing is rising, with 58% of full-time employees considering a transition to freelancing for greater control over their work lives. Brown predicts that companies that successfully leverage AI will thrive, while those that fail to adapt may struggle to survive.

He also introduces the concept of the "AI orchestrator," a new generalist role that effectively utilizes AI tools across various domains. Upwork is actively experimenting with various AI models to enhance its services and has shortened planning cycles to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.
